LEWISBURG, Pa. - Chris Ross scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute and Colgate ended the nation's longest team goal-scoring streak with a 1-0 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Holmes Stadium. The Bison fell to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League, and they had their Division I-best run of 28 straight games with a goal come to an end. The Raiders improved to 7-4-2, 3-1.
After celebrating Senior Day before the game, one of Bucknell's seven seniors just missed scoring only 30 seconds into the game. Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), the team's hottest goal scorer, pounced on a loose ball in the box and his sliding attempt just skipped wide of the right post. Worse, Schmiegel collided with goalkeeper David Cappuccio on the play and injured a leg. He stayed in the game but played sparingly in the second half.
Colgate broke the ice at the 16:02 mark on a flurry in the Bucknell penalty box. Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) turned aside one shot and defender Jason Soto (Hackettstown, N.J./Morris Catholic) cleared two more off the goal line, but shot No. 4 from Ross found the net.
The Bison outshot Colgate 8-5 in the second half, but their only dangerous look came just 2:30 into the half when Cappuccio was forced to make a tough save on Schmiegel's redirect.
The physical affair had a total of 24 fouls, 15 going against Bucknell. Colgate finished with a 17-14 shot edge, while Bucknell took three corner kicks to two for the Raiders.
Caso was credited with three saves, while his defenders helped out with three team saves. Cappuccio stopped five shots for the Raiders, who are 4-0-2 against the Bison in the last six meetings.
The last time Bucknell was shut out was all the way back on Sept. 11, 2007, a 1-0 loss at Binghamton. The 28 straight games with a goal is a new school record, crushing the previous mark of 15.
Despite the loss, Bucknell remains in Patriot League Tournament contention. The Bison are in sole possession of fourth place in the league standings. Holy Cross is in the lead with 10 points, followed by Colgate with nine and American, an upset winner at Lehigh on Saturday night, is in third with seven points. The Bison have six points, one better than fifth-place Lafayette.
Bucknell hosts St. Peter's in a non-league game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., then travels to Lafayette on Saturday night.
