Bucknell Tennis Completes Second Day of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell tennis teams continued singles play at the joint men's and women's Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4. Rain prevented doubles play, but the final two rounds of singles play were completed. The Bison men went 9-7, while the women compiled an 8-8 record for the day.
Bucknell senior co-captain Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) won both of his Flight No. 1 matches, defeating Jeremy Nolt of Wilkes (6-1, 6-3), and Joe Goldstein of Connecticut (6-3, 6-2). Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic), another Bison senior co-captain, also emerged victorious in two matches, defeating Kyle Ungvarsky of Wilkes (6-4, 6-1) and Joe Nuara of Quinnipiac (6-4, 6-3) in Flight No. 5 play. Freshman Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) was the third member of the Bison men's team to win twice on Saturday, winning his Flight No. 8 matches against Anthony Mirabile of Wilkes (6-2, 6-1) and Nick Visinsky of Connecticut (6-4, 6-3).
In more men's action, Bison junior Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) split a pair of Flight No. 2 matches, falling to Garrett Lane of the Bobcats (6-1, 6-3), but bouncing back to defeat the Huskies' Joey Michaels in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, (10-7). Sophomore teammate Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) also split his matches, first losing to James Kwei of Quinnipiac (6-4, 6-2), before winning 6-1, 7-5, over Wes McCollum of the Colonels in Flight No. 3.
The Orange and Blue's Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) lost 7-6, 6-1, to Dave Adams of Connecticut, before beating Jon Rohrbach of Wilkes, 6-2, 6-3, in Flight No. 6. Bucknell's Jamie Watson (Darien, Conn./Darien) lost both of his Flight No. 7 matches, falling 7-6, 6-0 to Matt Burns of Connecticut, and 6-1, 6-1 to the Bobcats' Charlie Feldman.
On the women's side, Bucknell's Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won both of her Flight No. 3 matches, defeating Lisanne Steinert of the Bobcats (6-0, 6-4) and Alexandra Erickson of Colgate (6-0, 6-2). Bison freshman Demi Iepuras (Moldova/Germantown Friends School) finished the invitational unbeaten in Flight No. 5, winning handily on Saturday. She beat Cameron Williams of the Raiders, 6-0, 6-0, and Kasey Rosenberger of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-1, after winning a tough three-set match on Friday.
The Orange and Blue's Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School), Tiffany Card (Lillte Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) all went 1-1. Lucido (Flight No. 2) lost to Natalie Duckor of the Bobcats, 6-2, 6-0, but beat Connecticut's Emily Herb, 6-0, 3-6, (10-7). Globerman, a senior, lost to BreAnn Cheung of Connecticut (6-2, 6-1), and beat the Bobcats' Nikki Adams (6-1, 6-2) in Flight No. 4. Card fell to Shawna Sarson of Quinnipiac, 6-2, 6-2, in Flight No. 7, before beating Emily Searle of the Huskies, 6-1, 6-3. Larkin, competing in Flight No. 8, lost to Colgate's Stephanie Brown (7-6, 3-6, (14-12)), before winning a considerably easier match against the Bobcats' Ali Warshavsky, 6-0, 6-0.
Bucknell's Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) lost a pair of Flight No. 1 matches, falling to Elise DeRose of Colgate (6-3, 7-6) and Kelley LoRusso of Connecticut (6-4, 6-2). The Bison's Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) also went winless on the day losing Flight No. 6 matches to Connecticut's Alexa Gregory (6-7, 6-1, (11-9)) and Cameron Thaney of Colgate (6-4, 6-1).
Doubles action will conclude the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 5.
