COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Bucknell senior Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perdiomen) scored all three of her team's goals, as she led the Bison to a 3-1 win against Georgetown at College Park, Md., on Sunday, Oct. 19. Bucknell now is 9-6 this season, and its nine wins are the most by the program in a season since 2003.
Boyer joins sophomore Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day), who scored a hat trick on Sept. 27 in a 7-1 win against Siena, as the first Bison teammates to have hat tricks in a season since Jen Zimmerman and Anne Hunsicker in 1999. Zimmerman had four goals in a 4-3 win over Columbia on Sept. 11 of that year, and scored three in a 6-0 win over Siena on Oct. 14, 1999. Hunsicker scored all three goals in Bucknell's 3-0 win over Lehigh on Oct. 2, 1999.
The Bison struck first, as Boyer notched her first goal 20 minutes, 20 seconds into the contest. She scored off of a rebound, following the third consecutive Bucknell penalty corner. The Orange and Blue outcornered the Hoyas 6-1 in the first half and 11-4 for the game. Bucknell outshot Georgetown 9-3 in the first 35 minutes, and Georgetown did not have any shots on Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex).
The Hoyas tied the game at one, 5:10 into the second half, scoring off of a penalty corner. Kristen Volpe was able to score from the right side of the circle against Bucknell's second half goalie, Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary). That was the only goal the Bison would allow, as Zargarpour made three second half saves.
Boyer scored what would be the game-winning goal at the 48:54 mark, assisted by classmate Katie Ruiz (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area). A little over five minutes later, Boyer scored tallied her final goal of the day, assisted this time by Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial).
For the game, the Bison outshot Georgetown 19-9. Boyer and Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) each had five shots and four shots on goal to lead the Orange and Blue, while Jacquie Kataneksza (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) made her return from injury and had three shots. Kataneksza last played on Sept. 19, against La Salle. Atieh was credited with the win, moving her record to 7-4 on the season.
Bucknell's next game is at home against Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. The class of 2009 will be honored prior to the 12 p.m. start time. The Bison are fourth in the Patriot League with a 1-2 record, while the Raiders are sitting in third place at 2-1. American and Lafayette are each 3-0 against conference competition and have already clinched two of the four Patriot League Tournament berths. Holy Cross and Lehigh are each 0-3.
