LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team earned a critical victory on Saturday, Oct. 25, defeating Colgate 4-3, at a rain-soaked Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. On the day that its class was honored before its final home game, it was a pair of seniors who stepped up for the Bison. Bucknell's Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored a pair of goals in the game's final five minutes, including the game-winning goal with one minutes, 17 seconds left to play, and classmate Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) added a goal and two assists, including the assist on Boyer's game-winner.
Playing through a steady rain, at times fairly hard, the Bison (10-6, 2-2 PL) avoided an early deficit thanks to a defensive save by senior co-captain Steph Graf (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) less than five minutes into the game. The Orange and Blue would score their first goal of the game following one of their eight first-half penalty corners, as Faust and Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) set-up Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) for her fifth goal of the season.
Bucknell goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) was stellar in goal for the Bison during the first half, making five saves, many off of penalty corners for the Raiders. The Bison would counter Colgate's charge with another goal off of their own penalty corner, as Faust rocketed home her career-best ninth goal of the season on assists from Raczek and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor). Bucknell would end the half with a 2-0 lead.
Play continued to go back-and-forth in the second half, until the Raiders struck with two goals in a 75-second span of time, tying the score at two, and prompting Bucknell head coach Jeremy Cook to call a timeout with 17:14 left to play in the half. The game would remain tied until 4:35 remained, and Boyer scored her seventh goal of the season on a hard shot from the center of the circle after Krebs was able to drive the ball inside. The Raiders immediately responded as Lauren Carey scored on a penalty corner 69 seconds later, to knot the score at three.
The crowd, filled with field hockey alumnae in attendance for Homecoming, rallied behind the Orange and Blue, and Boyer was able to send them home happy. Faust had a free hit from outside the circle, and Boyer tipped the ball that then went off of Colgate goalkeeper Sarah Pederson and high into the air before crossing the line into the back of the cage.
It is the second consecutive multi-goal game for Boyer, who had a hat trick against Georgetown on Sunday. Atieh finished with seven saves, while Faust's four points give her 28 for the season, moving her into seventh place on the Bucknell single-season scoring chart. With the win, the Bison have reached at least 10 wins in a season for just the fifth time in program history and the first time since winning a total of 14 games in 1999.
Bucknell is now tied for third-place in the Patriot League with Colgate (9-7, 2-2 PL), but holds the all-important tie breaker due to today's victory. With a win on Saturday, Nov. 1 against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., the Bison will guarantee themselves a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2006. The scheduled start time for Bucknell's game with Holy Cross is 12 p.m.
