WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell field hockey team was shut out for only the third time this season, losing to No. 20 American, 4-0, in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Bison's record now stands at 8-5 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Eagles improve to 7-6, including a 3-0 against conference opponents. American has now clinched one of the four spots in the Patriot League Tournament.
American outshot the Bison 18-4 and had 10 penalty corners to just two for the Orange and Blue. The Eagles scored their first two goals in the game's first 16 minutes, while Bucknell struggled to find its offense. The only other times the Bison have been shut out this year were against Villanova (2-0) on Aug. 30 and at Lock Haven (4-0) on Sept. 21.
The Eagles scored their third goal of the game eight minutes, 15 seconds into the second half, and Irene Schickhardt scored her second goal of the game with 47 seconds remaining in the game to complete the scoring. Schickhardt, American's leading scorer, also had an assist, giving her five points on the day. She has 10 goals and 25 points this season. Alyssa Poorman made three saves for the Eagles, recording her sixth shutout of the season.
Bucknell goalies Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) (four saves) and Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) (five saves) combined to make nine saves against American's vaunted attack. Bison senior Katie Ruiz (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) had two shots on goal late in the first half that Poorman turned away to preserve the American lead. Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) had both of the other shots for the Bison.
The Orange and Blue return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 19, for a meeting with Georgetown. The game will be played in College Park, Md., and is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
