LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team lost a hard-fought game to No. 10 Penn State at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 14, falling 4-2. The Bison (8-5) had a pair of one-goal leads in the first half, but the Nittany Lions (10-4) were able to tie the score just before halftime and register the only goals of the second half. Bison sophomore Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) assisted on both of her team's goals, setting a new school single-season assist record in the process. She now has 12 assists on the season, besting the mark of 10 that had been set three times before.
Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) gave the Orange and Blue a 1-0 lead nine minutes, 57 seconds into the game, scoring a goal following the first penalty corner opportunity for Bucknell on the evening. Kauffman passed the ball into Raczek, who stopped the ball for senior co-captain Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West). Faust then passed the ball back to Kauffman, who was lingering to the side of the Penn State goal cage and was able to score before goalkeeper Jen Beaumont could move back into position.
The Nittany Lions tied the score just four minutes later, as Jessica Longstreth intercepted a poor Bucknell pass to the middle of the field, drove in on goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and drew her out enough to be able to slip the ball past her. The Bison immediately responded, taking advantage of another penalty corner opportunity. This time Faust rocketed a shot past Beaumont from the top of the circle, with Raczek and Kauffman drawing the assists. Faust leads the Bison with eight goals this year, and her tally tonight surpassed her previous high for goals in a season, seven, set in 2006. Faust has also now accumulated 24 points on the year, matching her previous best season total, again set in 2006.
Penn State scored the critical game-tying goal with only 109 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, as Daneen Zug scored on a penalty corner for the Nittany Lions. The score would remain tied until Amy Bonenberger scored following another Penn State penalty corner, as Zug passed up the shot this time and found Bonenberger on the wing for the shot and the score past Bison goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary).
The Bison remained aggressive and forced the Nittany Lions into some giveaways, but they were not able to capitalize. Longstreth scored her second goal of the game, following a nice pass from Bonenberger, giving Penn State an insurmountable 4-2 lead with 6:01 remaining in the half.
Penn State outshot Bucknell 14-3, and outcornered the Bison 8-2. Zargarpour made two saves in the second half, after Atieh played the first 35 minutes. Steph Graf (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) made a defensive save for the Orange and Blue.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, traveling to Washington, D.C., to face No. 20 American (6-6). The seven-time defending Patriot League champion Eagles are 2-0 in Patriot League play so far this season.
