PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Just two minutes after his team fell behind by a goal, Bucknell senior Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored the equalizer, helping the visiting Bison pick up a 1-1 tie with La Salle Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
Bucknell went to overtime for the fifth time in 11 games this season and moved to 4-4-3 overall, while La Salle is now 1-5-3.
The Bison got off to a slow start in this one, getting outshot 10-3 in the first half. Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) made two first-half saves, and his defense cleared two more shots off the goal line to keep it a scoreless tie.
La Salle broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, when a bouncing ball came out to Ryan Dougherty at the 18, and he fired a shot past a screened Caso for a 1-0 Explorers lead.
Bucknell's energy picked up after the goal, however, and the Bison needed only 2:02 to get the game tied. On a throw-in, Matt Hittson (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) sent the ball to Scott Greenburg (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside Upper School) in the box. Greenburg headed the ball toward Russo, who headed it in the net for his second goal of the season. Greenburg, a sophomore who is in his first season with the team, notched his first career point with the assist.
The Bison outshot the Explorers 19-7 after halftime, including 7-4 in overtime. Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) generated three good chances late in the game, including a nice overtime crossing pass to Russo, whose volley went just wide.
Dan Pfeiffer finished with nine saves for the Explorers, who returned the favor by clearing two balls off their own line in the second half. Caso finished with four saves for the Bison. Bucknell was whistled for 19 fouls in the game, compared to eight for La Salle.
Bucknell gets back to Patriot League play on Saturday, traveling to Worcester, Mass., to face Holy Cross at 3 p.m. The Bison are 1-0 in the conference after defeating Navy 2-1 in overtime this past Saturday.
