BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) gave the Bucknell women's soccer team a 1-0 advantage in the 80th minute, but it wasn't enough as the Orange and Blue fell, 2-1, to Loyola (Md.) on Sunday afternoon. With the setback, the Bison are now 4-6-0 on the year, while the Greyhounds move to 3-5-1.
At 79:48, Dervarics was awarded a penalty kick and converted the attempt for the first tally in the contest. The goal was her fourth of the season and her 16th of her career, moving her into a tie for ninth in Bucknell history for career goals. She cracked the top-10 in career points as well as she is now 10th with 43.
The Bison lead was brief, however, as Christina Gomez netted the equalizer for Loyola less than two minutes later, connecting with a feed from Lea Day and Theresa Ferraina.
Then, at 87:16, Lina Staropoli dribbled around a Bison defender and drove a shot into the net from 15 feet out for the deciding tally.
Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Seltzer (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) made six saves in her first collegiate start, while Brittany Henderson totaled four stops for the Greyhounds. Loyola led in shots, 16-10, and corner kicks, 8-3, while fouls were 12-9 against the Bison.
Next Friday, Oct. 5, Bucknell will be back in action as the Orange and Blue will play host to Navy at 7 p.m. in the teams' Patriot League opener on Varsity Soccer Field.
