LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Marist on Friday night on Varsity Soccer Field. Following the loss, the Bison are now 4-5-0 on the season, while the Red Foxes level their record at 3-3-1.
After little action in the first 20 minutes of the contest, Marist broke the scoreless deadlock at 22:19, capitalizing on a free kick opportunity. Maria Baez cleared the Bucknell wall and banged a shot of the crossbar, which Kate Fox collected and knocked into the Bison net for her second of the season with Baez picking up the assist on the play.
Then, despite increased pressure by the Orange and Blue after the intermission, the Red Foxes iced the game with a tally by Laura Zasly in the 86th minute as she headed in a corner kick from Kristen Toliver.
The Bison saw several chances develop in the contest, but were unable to find the back of the net. Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) worked her way around the Marist defenders for a partial breakaway in the 79th, minute, but her shot was deflected out of play.
Bucknell trailed the Red Foxes in shots, 11-6, and corners, 3-2. Fouls were 8-5 against the Bison. Sophomore Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made four saves for the Orange and Blue, while netminder Caitlin Nazarechuk turned aside two shots for Marist.
The Bison will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30, as the squad will travel to Baltimore, Md., to face Loyola in a 1 p.m. contest.
