LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored in the 100th minute to help lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Cornell on Varsity Soccer Field this Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bison improve to 4-4-0 on the year, while the Big Red level their record at 4-4-0.
In the first half, Cornell generated the majority of the scoring chances, including a partial breakaway by Eva Dixon, which was stopped by Bucknell goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) and a shot by Samantha Wiener in the 26th minute that sophomore defender Lauren Stoller (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), cleared out, making the team save on the play.
Following the intermission, the Bison dominated play, attempting eight shots and placing five on target, while holding the Big Red to two shots, neither of which was on goal. Despite the increased pressure by the Orange and Blue, Cornell netminder Jodi Palmer held Bucknell off the board to force overtime.
Then, with 21 seconds remaining in the extra frame, sophomore Chelsea McGorry's (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) throw-in pass connected with Doherty on the right-hand side of the Big Red's goal. Doherty collected the ball and drove it high past Palmer for her fourth of the season and first career game winner.
Sutton made eight saves for the Bison and recorded her second shutout of the season. Palmer turned aside six shots for the Big Red. Shots and fouls were even at totals of 14 and eight, respectively, while Bucknell held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison will next take on Marist on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field. The match will be carried live on internet video broadcast, available for a subscription fee through www.BucknellBison.com.
