LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite entering halftime in a scoreless deadlock, the Bucknell women's soccer team was unable to hold off No. 17 Penn State, falling by the score of 5-1 before nearly 1,400 fans at jam-packed Varsity Soccer Field Wednesday evening. The setback leaves the Bison at 3-4-0 on the year and marks the first regular season loss for the Orange and Blue at home since Oct. 11, 2005, while the Nittany Lions improve to 4-2-1 with the victory.
The squads played even for the first 45 minutes of the contest with Penn State holding a narrow 5-3 advantage in shots. Neither side managed to put a tally on the board, despite quality chances by sophomores Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University H.S.) and Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) for Bucknell.
Then Penn State opened the second half with a goal by Ashley Myers from Melissa Hayes as Myers split a pair of Bison defenders and netted her first of the season at 47:50.
The Nittany Lions went up 2-0 in the 54th minute when Katie Schoepfer collected the ball off a rebound and sent it home into an open net, with the assist going to Myers.
At 59:25, the Bison countered to pull within 2-1. Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) delivered a sliding feed to sophomore Chelsea McGorry (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) who was alone in the center of the box and drove home her first career goal. The assist for Matlack extended her scoring streak to five consecutive games with at least one point.
That would be all for Bucknell, however, as Penn State responded with three tallies in the final eight minutes. Jessie Davis scored at 82:36 off a corner by Hayes and Aubrie Aden-Buie netted the final two for the Nittany Lions at 83:14 and 89:59.
Penn State held the advantage in shots, 20-7 and corners, 4-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made five saves for the Bison, while Alyssa Naeher totaled four stops for the Nittany Lions. Fouls were 5-4, against Penn State.
Bucknell will be back in action on Varsity Soccer Field this Sunday, Sept. 19, as the Bison will play host to Cornell at 3 p.m.
