LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) put the Bucknell field hockey team ahead of La Salle in the extra period, 1-0, after a scoreless 70 minutes of play Friday night at Graham Field.
It was Krebs' fifth goal of the season off an assist from junior Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) that gave Bucknell the win and brought the Bison to 4-3 on the year. La Salle (4-4) out-shot Bucknell 16-11, but at the end of the second period neither team had netted the ball, forcing overtime.
With just three seconds left in the first period, senior Chyncia Smith (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) nearly put the first goal on the board for the Bison shooting off a breakaway run. The shot was saved by La Salle goalkeeper Ellen Axelson.
At the 16:28 mark in the second period, junior Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkionmen) put a shot on goal wide, while Smith went on to have two more shots; the first at 10:42 was saved and the second at 6:58 went side. La Salle also made a shot attempt in the second half by Beth Carey that went just wide of the goal with under six minutes left in play.
Less than three minutes into the extra period, Krebs' shot on goal was saved, but she went on to score off a crossing pass from Faust with under a minute left to put the Bison ahead 1-0.
Sophomore Diana Bartley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) made eight saves off the Explorers' eight shots on goal, for her first shutout of the season. La Salle's goalkeeper, Ellen Axelson made four saves for the Explorers, off of Bucknell's five shots on goal.
The Bison are set to play at home against Saint Francis (Pa.) next Tuesday, Sept. 18. The match-up is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
