LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team celebrated its 300th game in the history of the program by posting a 5-2 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Varsity Soccer Field on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Bison move to 3-2 on the season, while the Red Flash fall to 3-2.
Bucknell opened strong, connecting for five goals on six shots in the first half. Freshman Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) began the scoring, punching in her second of the season from point-blank range off a feed from sophomore Chelsea McGorry (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) and freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) at the 8:50 mark.
Then in the 14th minute after Saint Francis failed to clear a Bison corner kick, Gentile added the next tally, heading in a ball from junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).
Matlack scored what would be the game winner at 27:24 after dribbling though the Red Flash defense and around goalkeeper Jessica Boyer to extend the advantage to 3-0.
The Orange and Blue went on to add two more in the half. The first came when Dervarics sent a cross from along the endline to Doherty in the box, which she touched in for her second of the night at 37:13. Dervarics later fed sophomore Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) for the fifth and final Bison tally at 40:20. The assist brought Dervarics' total to three in the contest and 11 for her career, moving her into a tie for eighth all-time in program history in that category.
Saint Francis broke up the Bucknell shutout in the 54th minute when Alanna Vespa found herself alone in front of the Bison goal to net her fifth of the season. The Red Flash added another at 56:45 as Haleigh Dunyon tucked a long-range shot under the crossbar that completed the scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) and Boyer made two saves apiece, while Bucknell outshot Saint Francis, 12-10 in the match. Corner kicks were even at three and fouls were 5-4, against the Bison.
Bucknell will take to the road for its next contest, playing in Moon Township, Pa., against Robert Morris on Saturday at 11 a.m.
