Eight Bucknell Track and Field Athletes Earn All-Academic Team Honors

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Eight student-athletes represented the Bucknell track and field squads on the 2007 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track and Field Teams, the .S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced recently. Recent graduates Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) and rising-seniors Beverly Rogers (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) and Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) earned spots on the women's team, while 2007 graduates Matthew Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Joshua Kaehler (Hanover, Pa./South Western), rising-senior David Mante (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and rising-junior Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) were named to the men's list.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in his or her respective event. On the women's side, 415 student-athletes representing 117 Division I colleges and universities made up the All-Academic team and the men's team was comprised of 233 student-athletes from 88 colleges and universities.
Buczko, who recently became Bucknell's 114th Academic All-American, finished her career with the Bison as a two-time Patriot League Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors twice as well. A civil-engineering major, Buczko graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.74 and was a 2004 Outdoor and 2005 Indoor NCAA Championship participant in the pole vault and was a four-time NCAA East Regional qualifier in the event.
Sawko was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team selection this spring and qualified for the NCAA East Regional for the second time in her career after winning Patriot League titles in the 800 and the 1,500. The English and sociology major graduated with a 3.74 grade-point average.
Rogers and Totten both qualified for the NCAA Regional at the 2007 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Rogers with her school-record throw in the javelin and Totten by virtue of her victory in the 3,000 steeplechase. Rogers, a physics major, carries a 3.73 GPA. Totten holds a 3.59 GPA as an English-creative writing major
Forys was an NCAA East Regional qualifier in the steeplechase, the 5,000 and the 10,000 this spring and went on to represent the Orange and Blue at the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase. He posted a 3.26 grade-point average as a mathematics major.
A participant in the javelin at the NCAA East regional his junior and senior seasons, Kaehler graduated with a 3.67 GPA in civil engineering. He was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team honoree this spring as well.
The reigning Patriot League Men's Track and Field Indoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Mante earned his spot in the NCAA East Regional Championships after winning his first Patriot League outdoor pole vault title. The civil engineering major was a 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team selection and is currently carrying a 3.63 GPA.
Macleod qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 400 hurdles but was unable to compete due to injury. He holds a 3.42 cumulative grade-point average in civil engineering heading into his junior year.
