LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes), the Patriot League's leading scorer, has been named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week after leading the Bison men's lacrosse team to a big 6-5 Patriot League victory at Army on Saturday.
Winter had two goals and an assist in the game, with both goals tying the contest in the second half. The Bison trailed the nation's top-ranked defensive team by two goals in the third quarter, but they tallied twice in the final 1:16 of the period to even things up.
Winter dodged past a defender for an unassisted goal with only five seconds left in the third quarter, tying the game at 4-4. Army went ahead 5-4 early in the fourth period, but Winter tied it again with 7:47 to play, setting the stage for Perry Menzies' go-ahead tally a little over two minutes later.
The Patriot League Rookie of the Year candidate now leads the conference in both points (38) and assists (25). He ranks second in the nation in assists and sixth in total points. Winter has at least one point in every game this season, and he has registered three or more points in nine of 11 games.
Winter, who is a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week selection this season, joins Joe Mele and Tim Brandau as men's lacrosse recipients of the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week award.
Now 9-2 on the season, Bucknell this week is ranked No. 12 in the USILA Coaches' Poll and No. 13 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Bison are next in action this Saturday, Apr. 14, against Patriot League rival Lehigh at 8 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
