LEWISBURG, Pa - Seniors Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) along with freshman Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.JRidgewood) of the Bucknell outdoor track and field teams were honored by the Patriot League Tuesday for their strong performances at the Jim Taylor Invitational and the Mason Spring Classic this past weekend.
Pierce earned his second Male Rookie of the Week award after he threw for a distance of 197 feet, 2 inches (60-10m) in the javelin, which was good for fourth place at the Mason Spring Classic. His mark qualified him for the IC4A Championships. Pierce holds the seventh-best toss in school history and the fourth-best mark in the league.
Hoffman, who was named the Male Field Athlete of the Week, captured the hammer throw title at the Jim Taylor Invitational when he threw a distance of 192-2 (58.58m). His mark made him an NCAA Regional and IC4A qualifier. The Lewisburg, Pa., native ranks fourth in school history in the hammer throw and holds the top throw in the league this season.
Buczko copped Female Field Athlete of the Week honors for clearing a height of 12-5 ½ (3.80m) in the pole vault, which won her the event at the Mason Spring Classic. Buczko, who currently holds the school record in the event, qualified herself for the NCAA East Regional and ECAC Championships in May.
Bucknell will split up for the second straight week as the Bison compete in the two-day Sam Howell Invitational and the Tiger Track Classic in Princeton, N.J., and in Auburn, Ala., respectively. The meets will begin on Friday, April 6.
