PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) - For the third consecutive year the Bucknell women's rowing team advanced four boats to the finals of the Murphy Cup Saturday under cool and rainy conditions on the Schuylkill River. After posting one victory last year, the Bison claimed a record three wins this year with the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice four all collecting first-place trophies. It was the first time in program history the varsity eight won at the Murphy Cup.
Bucknell also claimed the overall points trophy for the first time as well.
Each of the first-place boats beat out rivals in the finals with both the varsity eight and second varsity eight edging out Patriot League rival Navy and the novice four beating out regional rival Penn State.
The varsity eight of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jennie Trayes, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Betsy Schneider, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Caitlin Doolin and bow-Whitney Henry easily won its heat by nearly eight seconds over Dowling with a time of 5 minutes, 55.52 seconds. The Bison then came back and completed the finals even faster, shaving 0.13 off their time to defeat second-place Navy by nearly two seconds.
The second varsity eight of coxswain-Katie Kessler, stroke-Lauren Olsen, 7-Laura Roberts, 6-Elizabeth Regan, 5-Renee Alemi, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Meghan Murphy, 2-Sophie Bird and bow-Devon Mitchell cruised to a time of 6:07.73 in the heat, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the 6:26.06 posted by second-place Saint Joseph's. In the final the Bison shaved more than seven seconds off their time to cross the finish line in 6:00.63. Navy posted a time of 6:01.86 as no other crew was within 15 seconds of the two Patriot League boats.
The Bucknell novice four of coxswain-Mary Wilson, stroke-Kate Courtien, 3-Stefanie Marquette, 2-Jen Butler and bow-Chrissy Friedlander was edged out by Rutgers in the heat with a time of 7:21.35, but still earned a position in the finals. In the finals the Bison shaved nearly 40 seconds off their time (6:43.30). Penn State (6:50.0) and Rutgers (6:53.1) rounded out the top half of the standings in the final.
The second varsity four was Bucknell's fourth boat to reach the finals as it won its heat, but then placed third in the finals with a time of 7:00.58, behind Navy "B" and Penn State "A". The Nittany Lions won the finals in 6:46.90. The Bison second varsity four consisted of coxswain-Mary Wilson, stroke-Susan Shadle, 3-Amanda Gallina, 2-Jessica Glenn and bow-Amy VanNostrand.
The varsity four of coxswain-Lauren Yee, stroke-Gillian Carter, 3-Allie Hoch, 2-Beth Mooney and bow-Erin Henry just missed out on the finals by finishing second in its heat. However, only the first-place teams in the heats moved on to the finals and Navy "B" won the heat in 6:41.40, compared to 6:49.24 for the Bison.
Facing stiff competition the novice eight of coxswain-Lauren Lesko, stroke-Meghan O'Reilly, 7-Diana McCullough, 6-Kerry Sullivan, 5-Sarah Germani, 4-Kim Weaver, 3-Sara Baughn, 2-Justine Bailey and bow-Lauren Hallanan took fourth in its heat with a time of 6:05.12. Navy won the race in 5:45.63, but the Bison were less than six seconds behind second-place West Virginia.
After its busy day Saturday at the Murphy Cup, which was Bucknell's first competition in the Northeast of the spring season, it will travel back to the Schuylkill River next Saturday, March 31, to face Georgetown at 3 p.m. The Bison lightweights will also row at Princeton next Sunday morning to kick off the month of April.
