LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) continued her recent scoring spree with five goals and an assist, leading the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over Manhattan on Thursday at rainy Graham Field. The victory was the team's third in a row and leveled its season record at 3-3.
Donohue enjoyed her fourth straight game with four or more points, and she now has a team-high 21 points on the season, all in that four-game span. Sophomore Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) also had a big game with two goals and two assists, while freshman Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) found the net twice.
Defensively, freshman goalie Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) had another solid outing with 12 saves and only six goals allowed. The Bison forced 28 Jaspers turnovers, held them to 16 clears in 30 attempts and dominated the draw controls 15-5.
The start of the game was delayed about 40 minutes due to lightning, but the Bison did not need long to get going after the holdup. Sophomore Katlyn Recchia (Towson, Md./Towson) needed only 58 seconds to net the game's first goal on a free-position shot, and the Bison scored four more goals in a span of only 3:08 to streak to a quick 5-0 lead. Donohue scored two of those early tallies, while Buechel and Peters had the other two.
Brenna Tinari finally put Manhattan (1-5) on the board at the 17:15 mark. It was a 6-2 game inside nine minutes left in the first half when Peters and Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) scored only 16 seconds apart to make it 8-2 at the half.
Bucknell started the second stanza just like the first. Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) drew an 8-meter attempt just 44 seconds into the period and buried it for a 9-2 lead. Donohue followed off a Buchel feed only 51 seconds later, and another Donohue tally with 23:29 left gave the Bison their largest lead at 11-2, and they cruised home from there.
Alicia Psillos led Manhattan with two goals and two assists, while Lauren Civardi also scored twice, including one creative goal coming when she swatted one in off the ground from in front of the crease late in the game.
Bucknell scored on 11 of its first 20 shots and finished with a 26-25 shot advantage. The Bison won the ground ball battle 34-18, with Deitrich finishing with a game-high six ground balls, followed by five from Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and four from Erin Weinstein (Stanfordville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy).
Bucknell next begins Patriot League play on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lehigh.
