PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Freshman Carol Donahue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had four goals and rookie goalie Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) stopped a career-high 18 shots to backstop Bucknell's second straight terrific defensive effort in an 11-9 victory at Duquesne on Sunday afternoon.
The Bison (2-3), who were coming off an 18-5 win over LIU in Florida earlier in the week, held Duquesne (3-3) almost four goals below its season average. Sophomore defender Alex Radebaugh (Freeland, Md./Notre Dame Prep) helped shut down the Dukes leading scorer, Kathleen McNish, who came in with 15 goals and 16 assists in five games but was held to just a single assist on Sunday.
Offensively, Donahue also had an assist for a five-point day, giving her 15 points in the last three games. Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.Y./Columbia) added three goals and an assist for the Bison, who jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead.
Buechel scored three of the team's first five goals, the last coming at the 12:26 mark of the first half. Two straight tallies from Donahue made it 8-3 with 5:43 left, but the Dukes cut into the lead with three goals in only 2:09 just before halftime.
Sarah Cates scored the last two before the half, then added another three minutes into the second half to make it a one-goal game at 8-7. The Bison showed some resiliency, however, and never gave up the lead even though Duquesne pulled within one on three different occasions.
Donahue's goal just over a minute later made it 9-7. Janna Faulkner brought the Dukes within 9-8 with 14:56 to play, but 1:27 later Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) scored off a Buechel feed for a 10-8 Bucknell lead.
Duquesne got it to 10-9 on another Faulkner goal with 9:07 left, but Donahue scored only 57 seconds later to make it 11-9 and close out the scoring.
Hartsock made 10 of her 18 saves in the second half, nullifying Duquesne's 40-24 shot advantage. Duquesne used two goalies in the game. Meghan Holleran made four saves while allowing eight goals in the first half, while Caitlin Carducci stopped four shots with three goals against in the second.
Bucknell is back in action on Thursday at home against Manhattan. Game time is 4 p.m. at Graham Field.
