Bucknell Women's Swimming & Diving Sits in Second Following Opening Day of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) set a new school record in the 500 free as she took third in the finals of the event, helping the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team finish day one of the 2007 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships in second with 160 points. Navy ended the opening day of competition, held in Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium on Friday, with a field-best 198 points, while Colgate was third with 147 points.
The Orange and Blue began the evening session by placing third in the 200 free relay with the fifth-fastest mark in school history as the team of senior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), freshman Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), junior Kirsten Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) and senior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) combined for a time of 1:35.58.
Woodward followed up with her record-breaking performance in the 500 free as she touched the wall in 4:55.73 after first entering the top-10 with a time of 4:57.08, which ranked second all-time. Sophomore Ally St. Claire (Silver Spring, Md./Edmund Burke) qualified for the "A" final as well, where she finished eighth with a time of 5:07.99. Skroski won the "B" final with the sixth-fastest time in the Bucknell record books, 5:03.32. Senior Carlyn Donley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) followed in 10th (5:05.00) and senior Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) placed 12th with a time of 5:06.37, which ranks ninth all-time for the Bison.
Mongan was the lone representative for the Orange and Blue in the 200 IM "A" final, where she finished eighth in 2:11.75 after posting the sixth-best time in school history, 2:09.35, in the preliminaries. In the "B" final, freshman Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) placed 11th overall. She broke into Bucknell's top-10 with her trials time of 2:10.38 and later improved that mark to 2:09.42, good for seventh all-time. Freshman Abigail Atkinson (Newton, Conn./Newtown) finished 13th in the finals, touching the wall in 2:11.33.
Scheffter was the runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 23.80 and recorded the third-fastest time in school history, 23.75, in the preliminaries. Freshman Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) placed 11th (24.67) in the finals and sophomore Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) was 15th (25.35).
To close out the first day of action, the Bucknell 400 medley relay squad of Warren, Morris, Munson and Scheffter posted a time of 3:51.17, which ranks third in the Bison record books, to claim second in the event. v Earlier in the day, in the one-meter diving trials, the Bison saw two of its divers qualify for the finals. Freshman Eliza Massie (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) was third with a score of 236.65 and her classmate, Rebecca Bersani (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), took fourth after posting a score of 233.40.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow morning, Feb. 17, when the squad will begin day two of the PL Championships with trials beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals slated again for 6 p.m.
