HAMILTON, N.Y. - After posting the first three goals of the game and leading Colgate up until the 65th minute, the Bucknell field hockey team (6-7, 0-3 PL) fell to the Raiders (8-6, 2-1 PL), 4-3 in overtime, on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Kelly Hoffman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) put the Bison ahead, 1-0, in the 27th minute, going unassisted off a rebound for her seventh goal of the season. Senior Chyncia Smith (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) notched Bucknell's second goal of the game at 31:41 into play off a rebound from a penalty corner for her second of the year, to make the score 2-0 at the half.
In the second period, the Bison took a 3-0 lead when freshman Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor HS) netted the ball at the 36:37 mark off a rebound from Hoffman's initial shot on goal to tally her third of the season.
The Raiders then came back, rallying for three goals to equalize the score at 3-3. Lauren Carey notched the first goal for Colgate at 49:10, off assists from Maddie Watrobski and Natali Plesniarski, while Katelyn Nerbonne put the second goal on the board for the Raiders off a feed from Laura Flisnik in the 58th minute. With under five minutes left in regular time, Laura Denenga netted the ball off a penalty corner to tie the score.
Just over two minutes into the extra period, Colgate's Nerbonne went unassisted to net the ball and give the Raiders the win.
In 72:42 of play, sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made five saves off Colgate's nine shots on goal while the Raiders' goalkeeper Sarah Pedersen made four saves in the contest.
"I thought at times we played really well, but we were not able to sustain it for 70 minutes and Colgate capitalized on our lapses," said Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis.
The Bucknell field hockey team is now set to take on Cornell on the road, Monday at 6 p.m.
