WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) totaled seven points on three goals and one assist, helping the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Holy Cross on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Bison improve to 6-6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League, while the Crusaders fall to 3-9, 1-1 in league play.
Senior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) put the Orange and Blue on the board in the sixth minute as she scored from 12 yards out after a Holy Cross defender had cleared the ball off the line. The goal, which would be the eventual deciding tally, was her 14th game-winner of her career, pulling her to within one of the Bucknell record.
Then at 15:05, Dervarics fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net for her first of the contest, giving the Bison a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
In the second half, Dervarics struck again, connecting with a pass from Gentile at close range, which she booted past Jessica Pietrowicz in the 53rd minute.
The duo of Gentile and Dervarics produced the fourth goal as well, as Gentile netted her second of the game at 63:39 off a feed from Dervarics. Gentile is now third in program history in career goals with 31.
Just over three minutes later, Dervarics completed her hat trick with sophomore Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) earning the assist on the play. The tally, which was her team-leading seventh of the season, completed her seven-point night, helping her move up to eighth in Bucknell's record book in career points as she now has 50.
Freshman Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) capped off the win with her first collegiate goal, scoring on a rebound off the cross bar following a shot by senior Lesile Schulze (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) in the 84th minute. Schulze received credit for the assist.
Bucknell held a 25-13 shot advantage, placing 18 of those attempts on target, and led in corner kicks, 8-2. Sophomore Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made three saves and picked up her fourth shutout of the season to move within one of the Bison single-season record. Pietrowicz totaled 11 saves in the contest for the Crusaders.
Bucknell will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 14, as the squad will travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army in a 1 p.m. Patriot League match.
