Bucknell Women's Swimming & Diving Overpowers Lehigh, 209-91

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving squad celebrated Senior Day by posting wins in 12 of 16 events to roll to a 209-91 victory over Lehigh on Saturday in Kinney Natatorium. The Bison wrap up their 2006-07 dual-meet schedule with a record of 3-5-1, 3-2-1 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks are now 1-7 overall, 1-4 against league opponents.
After the team of freshman Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen), sophomore Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) senior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and senior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) opened the meet with a team season-best time of three minutes, 59.06 seconds, to take first in the 400 medley relay and freshman Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), freshman Caroline Walsh (Watchung, N.J./Kent Place School), freshman Sarah Pease (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin Senior High) and sophomore Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) followed with the runner-up time of 4:11.97, Bucknell held a 15-2 lead over the Mountain Hawks and never looked back.
Senior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) then placed second in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:31.35, the seventh-best mark in school history to help bring the score to 22-14.
The Bison won the next two events, starting with a one-two sweep in the 200 free. Freshman Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) broke into Bucknell's top-10 list with the winning time of 1:55.88, good for 10th fastest all-time, while junior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) was second with a time of 1:56.49.
Warren claimed the fastest time in the 100 back, touching the wall in 59.38 to improve her personal best, which is currently eighth in the Bison record books. Russell collected third as she swam the event in 1:02.19.
Morris was the runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.66 before Bucknell proceeded to capture the top two spots in the 200 fly and 50 free and swept one-through-four in the 100 free. Munson won the 200 fly in 2:09.47, while senior Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) followed in second with a time of 2:14.27. In the 50 free, Scheffter and Skroski went one-two with times of 25.11 and 25.45, respectively. Mongan led the way for the Bison in the 100 free (54.11), with Scheffter, sophomore Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), and Lovallo, filling in the three slots behind her.
Lehigh managed to post back-to-back wins in the 200 back and the 200 breast, however, the Bison captured the next three scoring finishes in both events. Warren swam the 200 back in 2:10.06 to place second, while Goeller was third (2:10.85) and Russell was fourth (2:14.35). In the 200 breast, Woodward took the runner-up spot (2:27.59), Morris (2:29.88) placed third and Walsh claimed fourth (2:37.30).
Bucknell went on to collect victories in every event the rest of the way. Skroski swam the 500 free in 5:12.35, good for first. Munson won the 100 fly with a time of 59.47, while Pease and Mongan finished third (1:01.28) and fourth (1:01.56), respectively. Goeller was victorious in the 400 IM with a time of 4:38.27. Russell came in third (4:43.50) and Woodward scored, as well, in fourth with a time of 4:43.64.
The Bison capped off the day by posting the three fastest times in the 400 free relay, led by Munson, Mongan, Horstmann and Scheffter as the squad combined for the winning time of 4:43.64.
On the boards, Bucknell divers claimed the top four scores in both events. Freshman Eliza Massie (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) was victorious in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions, with marks of 229.42 and 240.15, respectively.
Next Saturday, Feb. 3, the Orange and Blue will play host to the Bison Invitational, beginning at noon in Kinney Natatorium.
