LEWISBURG, Pa. - After competing in two successful meets, the Bucknell indoor track and field squads will host the Bucknell Heptagonal in Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 20. This will be the Bison's first scored meet of the season. Participating in the meet with Bucknell will be Duquesne, East Stroudsburg, Saint Francis (Pa.), Shippensburg, Towson (women), and Wagner.
In the first two meets, the Orange and Blue has seen athletes qualify for the ECAC/IC4A Championships in 10 events. On the women's side, seniors Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten), Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) and Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) qualified for the ECAC Championships. On the men's side, senior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), sophomore Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton), junior Brian Mooney (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), freshman Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central), and the relay team of seniors Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and freshmen Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.J./Gov. Dummer Academy) have earned spots in the IC4A Championships.
Grap became a NCAA provisional qualifier for the 20-lb. weight throw after throwing for 65 feet, 1 ¼ inches (19.84m) last Saturday at the Gulden Relays. She also broke the school and fieldhouse record. The senior won her first shot put competition with a distance of 45-3 (13.79m). She was recently named the Patriot League Field Performer of the Week as well as the ECAC Field Athlete of the Week. Grap ranks first in the league in both events.
Buczko holds down the top spot in the pole vault in the league with a height of 12-3 ½ (3.75m), which she recorded at the Bison Opener last month. She also has the fourth-best time in the league in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.19 seconds.
Sawko, who was named Female Track Performer of the Week by the Patriot League on Tuesday, tops the league list in the one-mile run with a time of 5:00.81. She is also part of the sprint medley relay team that broke a 17-year-old school record at the Gulden Relays with a time of 4:02.75, which ranks second in the league.
Additional Bison looking to make a impact at the Bucknell Heptagonal will be seniors Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y./Northport), junior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock), sophomore Gillian Nordquist (Clarkstown, Mich./Clarkstown) and freshmen Kalle James-Wintjen (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa/Hazleton).
Trentacoste and James-Wintjen should be competitive in the sprint events. Cranmer-Hart and Nordquist will lead the distance events, while Reinhardt and Mantush look to compete strong in the jump events.
On the men's side, Anthony, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, won his second straight long jump competition with a length of 23-0 (7.01m) at the Gulden Relays and should be one of the favorites in the event this weekend. The freshman also ranks first in the league in both the long and triple jumps, which he recorded at the Bison Opener.
Boyle posted a personal best in the 500 with a time of 1:03.76, which tops the league. He also helped set a new school record in the sprint medley, breaking a 31-year-old mark.
Hoffman has improved on his personal best in the 35-lb. weight throw twice this season. At the Gulden Relays, the senior picked up his first victory of the season with a distance of 60-9 ½ (18.52m).
Sophomore Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) will look to build on his first-place victory at the Gulden Relays in the high jump. Robinson jumped a height of 6-4 ¾ (1.95m), which lists him fourth in the league.
Seniors Sean Egan (Yorkstown Heights, N.Y./Fordham Prep.), Derrin Pierret (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), Caroleo and Forys will lead Bucknell in the distance events, while junior Matthew Johnson (Newburgh, N.Y./Marlboro Central) and Boyle look to compete strong in the sprint events this weekend.
The meet will lead off with the field events at 10:30 a.m., while the running events will start at noon with the 60 hurdles trials.
