LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nathan LaGrave (Okinawa, Japan/Kadena) scored his third goal in two home games, and Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) added his first of the season, to lead the Bucknell men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Campbell Friday night during the first day of the Geisinger/Days Inn Bucknell Invitational at a damp and foggy Varsity Soccer Field. The match was played before an estimated 500 fans, many of which were Bucknell Soccer alumni.
For the second consecutive home game LaGrave got the Bison offense started early with a goal just over five minutes into play. He knocked in a cross from Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who assisted on both goals to set a new career high. During Sunday's win over St. Bonaventure LaGrave gave Bucknell (3-1-1) a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into regulation.
Neither team scored again for nearly 80 minutes until Wolf looked like he sealed the game when he took the free kick from Russo and found the back of the net. Wolf jumped up in a crowd to gain control of the kick from Russo, which came from not far outside the left side of the box.
Despite trailing 2-0 late, Campbell (2-2-0) did not give up as Will Guadarrama narrowed the deficit to 2-1 when he scored off a rebound from Alex Bruemmer with exactly three minutes remaining on the clock.
Bucknell's solid defense held on from there, highlighted by some spectacular saves from Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), who fell just short of notching his second consecutive shutout. He was able to make four saves. The Camels goalie, Aaron Johnson, stopped seven shots as the Bison outshot an opponent for the first time this season, 13-11. Guadarrama attempted six of Campbell's 11 shots, including four of five on goal.
Courtesy of two points apiece Friday, LaGrave and Russo are tied for the team lead in points with six each. LaGrave has three goals on the season, while Russo has tallied two goals and a pair of assists. He has notched two points in each of the last three games.
In the first game of the evening, which was delayed for nearly an hour in the second half due to lightning, Rider defeated Duquesne in overtime, 4-3. Mike Juska lined up for a free kick and scored in the 106th minute to break the 3-3 deadlock. The Dukes had tied the score at 3-3 with 2:28 left in regulation on a goal by Travis MacKenzie.
The Bucknell Invitational concludes with a pair of games Saturday night at Varsity Soccer Field. Duquesne and Campbell will square of at 5:30 p.m., while Bucknell and Rider will tangle at 8 p.m.
