PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Andrew Loia's (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) goal on a penalty kick in the closing minutes of the first half tied the match and helped the Bucknell men's soccer team earn a 1-1 overtime tie against La Salle Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium. The tie extended the Bison unbeaten streak to five games for the first time since 2002.
Loia, the lone senior on the Bucknell squad, entered the season with a team-high four career goals and tallied his first one this year against the Explorers. His penalty kick found the upper-right corner of the goal just 1:06 before halftime.
La Salle jumped on top 1-0 when Joe Heavey scored in the 27th minute with Jeremy Ortiz and Brian Barry getting the assists.
Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) made five saves in goal for the Bison to increase his season total to 36, just three shy of his career high. His counterpart, Dan Pfeiffer, stopped three shots.
After outshooting each of its last two opponents, Bucknell narrowly lost the shot battle, 13-12. The Bison did attempt two corner kicks compared to just one for the Explorers.
Bucknell, which saw its four-game win streak snapped, opens Patriot League play Saturday at Holy Cross. The contest will kick off at 3 p.m. in Worcester, Mass., as the Bison continue their three-game road trip that wraps up next Wednesday at St. Peter's.
