LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior captain Shannon Curd (Westtown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) netted her first goal of the season in the 84th minute to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Colgate on Varsity Soccer Field this Saturday evening. With the win, the Bison improved to 6-3-1 on the season (1-0, Patriot League) and picked up their fifth consecutive victory, matching the team's longest streak of 2005. The loss dropped the Raiders to 8-3-0 (0-1, PL) and marked the first time the Orange and Blue have defeated Colgate since 2001, the third time in series history.
Bucknell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute as sophomore Renee Bernardo (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley) rifled a shot into the top right corner of the net on a feed from Curd off a corner kick.
The Raiders managed to tie the score at 75:54 when Jillian Arnault poked in a pass from Franny Iacuzzi amidst a scramble in front of the Bison goal.
Then 83:07 into the contest, Bucknell was awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box following a yellow card to Kellen Croll. Curd capitalized on the opportunity by blasting the ball over the defenders and past Colgate goalkeeper Carly Sousa for the deciding tally.
The Orange and Blue held the advantage in shots, 9-7, and in corner kicks, 8-7. Fouls were even at nine apiece. Bison netminder senior Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) made two saves while Sousa stopped three shots for the Raiders.
Bucknell will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when the squad will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell in a non-league match slated for 7 p.m.
