ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's soccer squad set a new program record for consecutive victories by defeating Cornell, 3-1, in Ithaca, N.Y., on Tuesday evening. The win was the sixth straight for the Bison, breaking the previous mark of five in a row, posted by the 2000 and 2005 squads. The Orange and Blue moved their record to 7-3-1 on the season, while the Big Red fell to 1-8-1 overall.
In the 28th minute, Cornell went ahead, 1-0, after a shot from 20 yards out by Kathleen Bubrick slipped through the hands of Bucknell senior goalkeeper Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and across the goal line. Megan Joerger was credited with the assist on the tally.
However, the Big Red's lead was brief. At 30:07, a shot by junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was stopped by Carlyn Swensen, but the rebound came to senior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) who drove the ball home for the Bison to knot the score at one.
Then in the 50th minute, sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season, heading in a cross from freshman Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) off a corner to put Bucknell in front, 2-1.
Freshman Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) iced the victory for the Bison with her tally at 87:09 from junior Kimberly Cannon (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) and sophomore Leah Grimm (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls).
Bucknell out-shot Cornell, 16-10 and trailed in corner kicks, 6-4. Dry turned aside four shots for the Bison, while Swensen recorded seven saves for the Big Red. Fouls were 10-9, against Cornell.
The Orange and Blue will next travel to the Lehigh Valley this weekend for games against Patriot League foes Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m., and Lehigh on Sunday at 1 p.m.
