Bucknell Field Hockey Falls To Lehigh In Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa - In the cold and rainy conditions at Graham Field Saturday afternoon, the Bucknell field hockey squad loss its Patriot League home opener to Lehigh, 3-1. The Orange and Blue suffered its fourth straight decision, falling to 4-5 overall (0-1 PL), while the Mountain Hawks improved to 3-6 (1-0, PL) on the year.
Lehigh jumped on the scoreboard first when Christy Smith scored on a penalty corner that was assisted Moira Garrity in the ninth minute to go up 1-0. The lead wouldn't last long as sophomore Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) crushed a shot passed the Lehigh goalkeeper in the 10th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Faust goal was assisted off a direct penalty corner from senior Alex Kyzmir (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) and sophomore Steph Graf (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East). The score would remain the same for the rest of the first half with the Bison holding the advantage on shots and penalty corners, 8-4 and 6-4, respectively.
In the second half, Lehigh would break the tie when Morgan Christopher scored off a rebound from the right side of the post to put the Mountain Hawks on top, 2-1 in the 48th minute. In the 66th minute, Kara Zweizig scored off a Terry Mongan pass to seal the victory for Lehigh.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) collected five saves, while Stephanie Palmieri notched seven saves. The Mountain Hawks held the overall advantage in shots and penalty corners, 10-9 and 8-7, respectively.
Bucknell travels to Washington, D.C. to battle No. 11 American in its second Patriot League match on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 12 p.m.
