VILLANOVA, Pa. - Freshmen Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) both recorded hat tricks, and five Bucknell players had multi-goal games to lead the Bison to a 13-4 rout of Villanova in a Patriot League women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Bucknell (3-9, 1-3 Patriot League) snapped a nine-game losing streak, won on the road for the first time this season and kept their Patriot League Tournament hopes alive.
Emily Burman (Kensington, Md./Stone Ridge), Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) all scored two goals, while Jackie Bodnar (Madison, N.J./Madison) tallied once for the Bison. Buechel added an assist for a career-best four-point afternoon.
Alex Garvey and Christina Bahrs scored twice each, accounting for all of the scoring for Villanova (3-11, 0-5).
Bucknell put this one away early, sprinting to a 5-0 lead by the midway point of the first half. Collins scored twice in that span, and Buechel's goal made it 5-0 at the 15:15 mark. Villanova finally got on the board with 7:40 remaining in the half on Garvey's unassisted tally, but Burman and Buechel scored just 45 seconds apart, then Deitrich tallied off a pass from Burman to make it 8-1 and chase starting goalie Jessica Brozena. Burman's second goal and third point of the half came with just 35 seconds left, giving the Bison a commanding 9-2 lead at intermission.
Kremer, Collins and Buechel all scored the first seven minutes of the second stanza to make it a 12-2 game and make any hopes for a Villanova comeback unreachable.
It was a stellar day for the Bison defense, which allowed a season-low four goals and only 12 shots. Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) was called upon to make six saves, but the defensive corps kept the ball away from her for most of the day. Villanova had 27 turnovers, five of which were caused by All-Patriot League defender Rachel Prowler (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter). Deitrich caused four turnovers and logged a game-high five draw controls, as the Bison won 13 draws to the Wildcats' six.
After winning for the first time since March 4, Bucknell will now look to build a winning streak on Wednesday when it hosts Wagner at 4 p.m.
