LEWISBURG, Pa. - After Saturday's 14-4 victory over Villanova, the women's lacrosse team stretched their success into a two-game win streak with a 13-5 win over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon on Graham Field in Lewisburg, Pa. The 13 goals were stretched among five different players, while the Bison defense shutdown the treacherous Seahawk offense.
Bucknell opened the first half with an unassisted goal from freshman Sarah Collins (Golden Bridge, N.Y./John Jay), just one minute and 46 seconds into the game. Wager's offense remained silent for almost 10 more minutes as freshman Jackie Bodnar (Madison, N.J./Madison), junior Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and Collins each knocked in a goal.
Then at 19:01, the Seahawks awakened as Heather George scored off a free position shot, which was retaliated by another score from Collins, at 16:53, and a tally from senior Emily Burman (Kensington, Md./Stone Ridge) at 11:49.
Wagner answered Collins' and Burman's goals with a score of their own at 7:43, but Bodnar quickly made a goal for the Orange and Blue at 5:59. With 5:41 left on the clock, the Seahawks' Jessica Richmond scored the last tally of the half.
Just as they did in the first half, the Bison struck first in the second, with an unassisted mark from Burman, just under three minutes into the period. Collins added her fourth and final tally of the game at 25:41, which was answered by Wagner's George 26 seconds later. Burman was quick to retaliate George's goal with her third mark of the game at 24:21, while Kremer added another goal, with the clock reading 21:39.
With 14:06 remaining in the game, Burman knocked in her fourth score, which did not get answered by the Seahawks until the 6:07 minute mark, from George for her third goal of the game.
With just over two minutes left to play, freshman Casan Van Langen (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) scored the final goal of the game.
The Bucknell defense held a Wagner team that averages 12 goals per game to only five.
Leading the defensive effort for the Bison was senior goalkeeper Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) with 13 saves, one groundball and one caused turnover. Senior Rachel Prowler (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) collected two groundballs and one caused turnover, while freshman Catherine Barry (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded two groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Burman also collected three groundballs in the defensive effort.
The Orange and Blue (4-9, 1-3 PL) will return to action on Saturday, April 15, hosting Lehigh in a very crucial Patriot League match-up at Graham Field. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
