LEWISBURG, Pa. - Delaware's Carolynn Sloat and Lindsay Jones each pitched shutouts as the Bucknell softball team was swept in its final non-league doubleheader of the season, 5-0 and 8-0 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field. Cassie Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) led the Bison with two hits in the doubleheader.
Sloat (17-12) took a no-hitter two outs into the fifth inning before Lloyd broke it up with a single to right field. Pinch hitter Meghan Feller (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Notre Dame) singled up the middle in the seventh for the only other hit of the game for Bucknell (14-34). Sloat struck out seven as she pitched her 24th complete game of the season, and her seventh shutout.
Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Allison Borchers and Katie Lee led off the game with back-to-back doubles. Borchers then scored on a sacrifice fly, while a single by Barbara Traynor brought home Lee against Bison starter Christie Wiest (4-12) (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley).
Wiest settled down after the first inning and retired 10 of 11 hitters at one point as she recorded her 10th complete game of the season. However, the Blue Hens loaded the bases in the fifth inning without scoring, and plated three in the sixth on five hits, including a two-run single by Jenny Gilkins. Wiest yielded all five runs in the game on 10 hits and walked two. She recorded one strikeout.
Bucknell struggled offensively in the second game against Jones, managing only three singles. Lloyd, Lauren Wible (Dover, Pa./Dover) and Ashley Sarnecky (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Charter) each registered a hit as Jones tallied her third shutout of the season.
Meaghan Haley (3-5) (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) started for Bucknell and gave up three unearned runs in 3.0 innings. Meg Muirhead (Glendale, Calif./Flintridge Academy) yielded four runs in just one inning, while Katie McDonald (York, Pa./West York) gave up the game-ending RBI triple to Gilkins in the fifth.
Delaware (30-17) scored three runs in the second inning with Kim Ovittore's two-run double being the big blow. Ovittore was a team-best 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. No other teammate had more than one hit as Delaware touched the Bison staff for eight hits in the contest. Michelle Plant did record a pair of runs batted in on a single in the four-run fourth inning.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play with a pivotal four-game series at Lafayette this weekend. The Bison and Leopards enter the series tied for third in the conference standings with matching 7-9 records. The top four teams in the final league standings qualify for the postseason.
