SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - Despite constant, driving rains, the Bucknell women's rowing team was able to complete the second of its two events Saturday afternoon as it hosted Buffalo and Patriot League rival Colgate on the Susquehanna River and won four of the five races. Earlier in the day the Bison won four of five races against Cincinnati and West Virginia. All four teams were paying their first visits to Bucknell.
Due to winds out of the East, competition was able to continue despite the downpours that plagued the Susquehanna Valley Saturday. Bucknell was able to win the novice eight, second varsity four, varsity four and second varsity eight. The Bison finished third in a tightly contested varsity eight race.
The novice eight boat of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Julia Martin, 7-Kelly McGaw, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Lisa Prasto, 4-Beth Mooney, 3-Lauren Gibbons, 2-Vicki Cohen and bow-Renee Perry, which posted a second-place finish in the morning, got things started with a close win over Colgate, finishing in 9 minutes, 21.64 seconds, less than two second ahead of the Raiders (9:23.53). Buffalo took third in 9:49.89.
The second varsity four of coxswain-Anna Latimer, stroke-Susan Shadle, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Courtney Luzzi and bow-Amy VanNostrand duplicated its feat from the morning by posting a victory. After winning by nearly 13 seconds in the morning, they posted a four-second win over Buffalo, crossing the line in 10:15.73 to the Bulls' 10:19.93.
Bucknell won the varsity four race a little easier with a time of 10:08.59, 15 seconds faster than the other two boats in the field. Buffalo (10:23.80) took second, while Colgate (10:31.42) claimed third. The Bison varsity four was comprised of coxswain-Lisa Patel, stroke-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Julie Curtis and bow-Amanda Gallina.
The second varsity eight continued the Bucknell dominance with a time of 8:30.77 to finish first. Colgate took second in 8:42.96, while Buffalo finished third in 8:59.49. Buffalo's lightweight boat crossed the line fourth in 9:40.51. Coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof comprised the Bison second varsity eight.
The varsity eight of coxswain Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jannie Trayes, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird, which won the first race of the morning by nearly 14 seconds tried to end the day with a victory as well, but came up short in a close race. Colgate won the three-boat race in 8:25.38 with Buffalo (8:36.31) and Bucknell (8:39.58) not far behind.
Bucknell concluded its 2006 home schedule with the two events Saturday. The Bison will be in action next Sunday, April 30, at the second-ever Patriot League Championship.
