LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison men's tennis team lost to Patriot League foe Colgate, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon on Bucknell's tennis courts in Lewisburg, Pa. Sophomore Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) pulled in his second dual-match victory of the season.
Bucknell grabbed one match in doubles, with freshmen Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) defeating the pair of Chris Innes and Mike Shea in No. 3. The pair of freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) and sophomore John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) fought a long battle in the No. 2 spot, but just ran out of steam as Martin MacIntyre and Tyler Deck won the match, 9-8 (5).
Young was victorious in the No. 6 position over Mike Shea, 6-2, 6-3, while Sandburg persevered in a tough three-set match, but fell 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Marshall Wheeler in the No. 5 position. Senior Asher Salam also took his opponent, Martin MacIntyre, to three-sets, but lost 6-1, 2-6, 2-6 in the No. 2.
It was a tough loss for the Orange and Blue as a win meant becoming one match closer to a Patriot League Tournament berth. Now, the Bison have to win both remaining league matches, against American and Lehigh, in order to see post-season action.
Bucknell is schedule to battle at Bloomsburg on Tuesday, April 18 at 4:30 p.m., which will serve as a warm-up for the Patriot League showdown against Lehigh on Thursday, April 20, in Bethlehem, Pa., at 3 p.m. On Friday, April 21, the Bison will host American at 3 p.m.
