LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell tennis teams have a big weekend in store as Patriot League foe Colgate comes for a visit on Saturday, April 15, on Bucknell's tennis courts in Lewisburg, Pa. With the women in a battle for the second-place spot in the league, the men are looking for just an entry ticket.
The women are currently in third place, with a 2-2 record, but a win this weekend could give them an edge on a second-place seed going into the tournament, scheduled for April 22-23, in West Point, N.Y.
Providing leadership for the women are senior co-captains Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley). Brown has been playing strong in the No. 1 spot for the Orange and Blue and currently sits just one match away from tying the school's career combined doubles and singles victory record, at 154-86. Mills, in the No. 2 spot has also recorded a successful 2006 campaign so far, and has moved up to the fourth-best spot on the Bucknell list for a combined record of 119-61.
Four freshmen have been filling the No. 3-No. 6 spots, with Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates), in the No. 3, Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) as No. 4, and JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) in the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.
On the men's side, this upcoming match proves to be very important as a loss could make earning a trip to the tournament very difficult, but a win would put the Bison one match closer to clinching a berth.
Playing in the No. 1 spot has been sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day Upper), who has pulled in a record of 6-9 (2-1 PL), while senior captain Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) has been the main No. 2 player, as has pulled in an '06 record of 6-8 (2-1 PL).
Spots No. 3 and 4 should be filled by junior Matt Pikus (Medford, N.J./Lenape) and sophomore Josh Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely), with either man playing in either position.
Freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) has been strong in the No. 5, while the No. 6 spot could be filled by sophomore Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) or freshmen Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade).
The men have three Patriot League matches left in the season and in order to clinch a spot at the tournament, Bucknell has to win two out of the three.
The women's match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's match at 2 p.m.
