Competition at the Liberty Invitational Concludes for Bucknell Track & Field

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Bucknell track and field program completed a very successful day of competition at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., on Saturday, April 1, as it produced four ECAC/IC4A Championship qualifying marks in the women's pole vault, triple jump and discus, as well as in the men's 400-meter dash.
Qualifying in the pole vault was junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler), who hit the exact mark at 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches, while also taking first in the event. Classmate Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) threw the discus 138-5, for a second place finish, while junior Ann Doty (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) earned a spot in the triple jump, with a leap of 39 1/4. On the men's side, freshman Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) clocked a winning time of 48.55 seconds, not only earning an IC4A spot, but also placing him as the Bison's fifth-best runner in the event.
Grap also produced a first place finish in the hammer, 176, while sophomore Amanda Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) turned in a third place finish in the event, 158-5, and a second place finish in the discus, 138-5.
Freshman Kati Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) placed second in the high jump, with an outdoor personal best mark of 5-3.75, and in the long jump, with a mark of 17 1/2, as sophomore Beverly Rogers (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) won the javelin, recording a heave of 136-6.
In the field events for the men, senior Dan Frake (Northport, N.Y./Northport) won the shot put with a mark of 50-10 3/4, placing him third in the school record books, and took second in the hammer throw, 183-4. Junior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) took fourth in the hammer, with a mark of 169-10, while junior Josh Kaehler (Hanover,Pa./South Western) took second in the javelin (197-11).
Sophomore David Mante (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) was handed a third place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 14-5 3/4, while freshman Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) finished third in the high jump (6-5 1/2).

On the women's end of the track, junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) won the 800 with a time of 2:14.83, and placed second in the 1500 with a time of 4:37.85 behind junior Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), who won the event with a time 4:35.64, and earned a fourth place finish on the Bucknell top-10 list. Junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) finished fourth in the 1500, with the school's ninth best time of 4:40.88, while sophomore Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) clocked an 800 time of 2:16.36.
Junior Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y/Garden City) took second in the 100 hurdles, matching the Bison's fourth-best time of 14.67, while Buczko placed third in the event (14.91). Trentacoste also won the 400-hurdles (1:03.26), while junior Chessa Forer (New York, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) finished second in the 100 (12.55) and sixth in the 200 (26.03).
Freshman Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagra Wheatfield) finished the 400 in fourth place in 59.22, as junior Sarah VandenBroek (Hyde Park, N.Y./Roosevelt) finished in fifth (59.51).
The 4x100 relay team of Trentacoste, VandenBroek, Forer and sophomore Leslie Emons (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) earned a second place finish (49.05), while the 4x400 team of Bricker and Sawko, with juniors Kat Allen (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) and Mariel Fink (Pennington, N.J./Hun School of Princeton), won the event in 4:03.36.
On the men's side, senior Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) took first in the 5000, in 15:19.97, as junior Sean Egan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Fordham Prep.) finished second in the event in 3:58.74.
Senior Ryan Whitfield (LaGrange, Ga./LeGrange) just missed making an appearance on the Orange and Blue's top-10 list in the 110 hurdles with a second place finishing time of 15.25.
Sophomore Andrew Corral (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) took second in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:47.44, while juniors Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and Derrin Pierret (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) finished third and fifth in 1500 with times of 3:57.78 and 3:58.74, respectively.
"I thought our athletes competed very well," said head coach Kevin Donner. "It is still early in the outdoor season, and both teams are way ahead of where they were a year ago."
The Bison squads will return to action next weekend at the Sam Howell Invite in Princeton, N.J. Action begins on Friday, April 7, and will conclude on Saturday, April 8.
