LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team put up a fight against No. 7 Penn State for the first 15 minutes, but fell to the Nittany Lions 19-5 Tuesday afternoon at Graham Field in a makeup game from last Thursday. The loss was the first of the season for the Bison, who fell to 2-1. Penn State improved to 3-0.
Bucknell trailed just 5-4 after Emily Burman (Kensington, Md./Stone Ridge) tallied her third goal in less than eight minutes nearly 15 minutes into the game. However, Penn State scored the next 14 goals unanswered. The Nittany Lions took a 15-4 lead into halftime after the high-scoring first half.
Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville), who also assisted on a Burman goal, scored the first goal of the game for the Bison 3:48 into the contest to tie the score at 1-1. Less than two minutes later Burman netted the first of her three goals to give Bucknell its only lead over nationally ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions quickly scored four straight goals in less than four minutes to retake the lead. Shari Maslin, who registered a team-high six goals, all in the first 25 minutes of play, found the back of the net twice in that stretch.
Burman brought the Bison back to within 5-4 with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart, but Bucknell was held scoreless for more than 45 minutes until freshman Casan Van Langen (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) netted the first goal of her career in the final minutes. Classmate Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) contributed a game-high three assists.
Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) made a season-high nine saves in net for Bucknell as Penn State attempted 31 shots to 13 for Bucknell. The Nittany Lions' two goalies, starter Cammie Jurkowsky and backup Jess Boccio, made three saves apiece.
Lindsay Dutch and Kerry Shea helped Maslin on the offensive end for Penn State with three and two goals, respectively. Eight other players tallied one goal apiece. Dutch and Kim Kontson each posted two assists.
Bucknell held its own by scooping up 16 ground balls to Penn State's 18, but the Nittany Lions won 18 of 26 draw controls. The Bison were just 12 of 18 on clear attempts, while Penn State was a perfect 13 of 13.
Bucknell opens Patriot League play Thursday with its first road game of the young season as it travels to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette at 7 p.m.
