DAVIS, Calif. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team fell to Columbia 15-4 on Monday afternoon at Aggie Field in Davis, Calif., in the spring-break opening game. The loss pushes the Bison to an overall record of 2-3.
The Orange and Blue had a tough outing as the offense was unable to get fired up against the strong threat from Columbia.
In the first half, Bucknell was outscored 8-1, as Columbia's Catherine Lee marked the first score of the game in 45 seconds of play. The next goal was tallied at the 5:38 minute mark by Kate Lombard. After six Columbia goals, freshman Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) found an open net and scored the first Bison goal of the game. The half was closed out by a tally from Lombard with less than two minutes left to play.
Bucknell played a closer second half, but was unable to narrow the margin by enough to catch up to Columbia.
Carrie Anderer opened the half with a Columbia goal, but sophomore Elizabeth Whipple (Glenarm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) retaliated soon after and scored the first Orange and Blue mark of the half, with 22:05 left on the clock.
Freshman Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) scored the second Bison goal of the half, assisted by Collins, with nine minutes left to go.
In the last two minutes of the game, freshman Casan Van Langen (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) found an open Columbia net off a free position shot.
On Columbia's end, Carrie Anderer recorded a game-high four goals, while Lombard finished the day with three.
Defensively for Bucknell, senior goalkeeper Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) collected six saves, three caused turnovers and two groundballs, while sophomore midfielder Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) recorded three groundballs and two draw controls.
The Bison will look to collect their first spring-break win as they battle host Davis, on Wednesday, March 15. Game time is set for 7 p.m., Eastern.
