LEWISBURG, Pa. - Drexel's Emily Hoesch scored five goals, trumping a five-point day for Bucknell freshman Jackie Bodnar (Madison, N.J./Madison), as the unbeaten Dragons outlasted the Bison 11-7 in a non-league women's lacrosse game Tuesday afternoon at Graham Field.
Bucknell made a spirited rally from an early three-goal deficit to take the lead midway through the second half, but Drexel scored the game's final five goals to improve to 8-0 on the season. The Bison dropped their seventh straight and fell to 2-7.
Two goals each by Hoesch and Jessica Bill helped stake the Dragons to a quick 5-2 lead, but the Bison stymied Drexel's vaunted attack and got right back into the contest. Drexel came in averaging 16.4 goals per game and had won each of their first seven games by an average margin of 11 goals per game, but the Bison outscored the Dragons 5-1 over a 30-minute span to take the lead.
Late in the first half the Bison got a number of big saves from Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and tightened up their transition game after Drexel was able to capitalize on a handful of early turnovers. In the final four minutes of the half Bodnar had a hand in three straight goals to help Bucknell tie the game. With 3:57 left she beat a defender to the goal and scored to make it 5-3. Then with 2:17 remaining she fed Ashley Flood (Westfield, N.J./Lawrenceville School) to the left of the cage, and Flood spun and scored her first goal of the season. Less than a minute later Bodnar scored on a free-position shot to knot the game at 5-all heading to intermission.
Drexel snapped a 19:38 scoreless drought when Hoesch finished a Gwenna Johnson feed to open the second-half scoring. Seven minutes later Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) spotted Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) cutting to the net, and Buechel buried a shot to tie the game at 6, and Bodnar's unassisted tally moments later put the Bison ahead 7-6.
At the 10-minute mark McDaniel made a big save on Kerry Kelly on an 8-meter attempt, but Drexel tracked down the loose ball and Colleen Rocks came from behind the net to score the go-ahead goal with 9:51 to play.
Bucknell had two good chances to tie the game again, but Lauren LaBella made a save on Flood, and Buechel had her stick checked at the last minute from close range. Drexel capitalized in transition, as Kelly scored off a pass from Katie Bradley to make it 9-7 with 5:53 to play. Hoesch and Rocks tacked on insurance goals in the final four minutes.
Three days after making a season-high 14 saves in a 6-5 overtime loss to Virginia Tech, McDaniel stopped 12 shots against the Dragons. Drexel came in averaging 37.7 shots per game, but the Bison held it to 29 attempts. Bucknell took 22 shots, eight of which were saved by LaBella.
Drexel won the ground ball battle 28-25 and took 13 draws to Bucknell's seven. The Bison forced more turnovers, 23-20.
With her four goals Tuesday, Bodnar took over the team goal-scoring lead with 11. Her assist on Flood's goal was the first of her career.
Deitrich led Bucknell with five ground balls, while rookie defender Alex Radebaugh (Freeland, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had four. Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) grabbed a team-high three draw controls.
Things don't get any easier for the Bison, as defending Patriot League champion Colgate comes to Graham Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
