LEWISBURG, Pa. - In the first Patriot League match of the season, the Bison men's tennis team fell to Navy, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon on the Bucknell tennis courts in Lewisburg, Pa. The Orange and Blue kept Navy close, but just was unable to seal the win. Despite the loss, Bucknell was able to pick up wins in the No. 2 and No. 5 singles spots.
Navy won the doubles point, and then took four of the singles points.
Senior Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), partnered with sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) played a solid game and won the lone doubles match of the day at the No. 1 position over Navy's Brandon Carter and Nate Nelms, 9-8 (3).
Salam also had a strong outing in the No. 2 singles position as he was very confident in his strokes and defeated Jason Hill 7-5, 7-6 (8).
Junior Matt Pikus (Medford, N.J./Lenape) was also victorious in his singles match, at the No. 4 spot, forcing Carter to lose the first set 6-4, and then a 3-0 retire in the second.
The doubles pair of freshman Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) played a very tight match against Jason Hill and John Waters, but finished on the short end of a 9-7 score. Freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) also played a close match, but fell 7-5, 7-6 (8) in the No. 5 singles spot to Waters.
Bucknell will take five days off, before traveling to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to battle Marist. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
