LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman attackman Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), the hero of the Bucknell men's lacrosse team's stunning upset of No. 1 Maryland last week, has been rewarded with a pair of weekly honors on Monday afternoon. Mele was named the Patriot League Player of the Week, as well as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week.
On Tuesday in College Park, Md., Mele scored three goals, the last coming with nine seconds remaining in double overtime, to lead Bucknell to a 7-6 victory over the Terrapins, their first-ever victory over the nation's No. 1 ranked team.
Mele also had a big fourth-quarter goal on Saturday at Holy Cross. The tally sent that game into overtime, where Bucknell won 4-3 to improve to 3-3 on the season, 1-1 in the Patriot League.
Mele leads the 20th-ranked Bison with 12 goals. Earlier this season he was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high five goals in a win over Mount St. Mary's.
His team will be back in action on Tuesday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium against No. 14 Penn at 7 p.m.
