WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Keita Aoki (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International School) shot an even-par 71 to stand in a tie for fifth place individually, but the rest of the Bucknell men's golf contingent struggled against a talented field on a cold and windy day on the Virginia coast in the team's spring opener at the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Resort & Spa.
The Bison are in 14th place out of 22 teams after shooting a team score of 304. Liberty at 292 has a one-shot lead on Maryland after the first of two rounds.
Aoki also shot 71 in his final round of the fall season at the Don Mershon Classic. He is just two shots out of the lead, held currently by Will Shriver of Loyola, Josh Anderson of St. Bonaventure and Brent Paladino of William & Mary. Liberty's Andrew Turner shot a 1-under 70 and is alone in fourth place.
Also for Bucknell, Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Ryan Moran (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) both shot 77, Patrick Yingling (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) shot 79 and Chas Wagner (Oakmont, Pa./Hampton) 86.
Weather permitting, round two of the William & Mary Invitational will begin Tuesday morning.
