WORCESTER, Mass. - For the second time in two games the Bucknell men's lacrosse team won in overtime as a goal by sophomore Nick Marks (Barrington, Ill./Salisbury School) with 28 seconds remaining in overtime gave Bucknell a 4-3 victory over Holy Cross Saturday afternoon. Marks, who had a career-high three scores in the contest, helped even the Bison record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play.
Earlier in the week Bucknell knocked off No. 1 Maryland in double overtime.
Playing its fourth consecutive game away from home, Bucknell jumped out in front 1-0 in the opening minutes of the first quarter when Marks netted his first goal. Neither team would find the back of the net for more than 16 minutes until Holy Cross' Toby Banta evened the score with 12:30 left in the second quarter.
With his second goal, Marks gave Bucknell a short-lived 2-1 lead as he scored with 3:36 left before halftime. However, the Crusaders' John O'Sullivan tied the score just over two minutes later as the two teams went into the locker room tied at 2-2.
The defenses took over in the third period as neither team was able to tally a goal. Bucknell, which outshot Holy Cross 23-21 in the game, attempted three shots in the third period, while the Crusaders fired six at Bison goalie Matt Baran (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall), who made eight saves in the contest.
Holy Cross (0-6, 0-1 PL) took its first lead of the contest just 31 seconds into the fourth quarter on a goal by Billy Klotz. However, Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tallied his team-high 12th goal of the season 26 seconds later to tie the score again. Neither team would find the back of the net again until Mark' game-winner.
The Bison gave a valiant effort to win the game in regulation, but Crusader goalie Matt Fallon recorded seven of his 15 saves in the final quarter of play.
Bucknell, which won just 4 of 11 faceoffs, was 1-for-1 in overtime. The Bison also converted 18 of 21 clears, compared to 15 of 23 for Holy Cross. Neither team converted in an extra-man situation. Bucknell was 0-for-2, while Holy Cross was 0-for-4.
The Bison return home for the first time since Feb. 28 Tuesday night when they host Penn at 7 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
