WEST POINT, N.Y. - Alex McGuire made two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining to lead Army to a 66-65 victory over Bucknell in a matchup of first-place teams Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena. The Bison led most of the second half, but tallied just two field goals in the final 6:45 of play.
Bucknell (16-9) and Army (16-9) entered the game tied for first place in the Patriot League with matching 9-2 records. The Bison fell into second place, while the Black Knights stand alone in first place.
Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) tallied her fourth career double-double in the losing effort with 20 points and 13 rebounds. She made 9 of 15 field goals, including 6 of 8 in the second half.
After holding a 32-31 halftime lead, Bucknell came out of the gate in the second half slowly as Army scored eight consecutive points during one stretch to open a five-point lead, its largest of the half. However, the Bison, who made 12 of their first 15 field goal attempts in the second half, went on a 25-12 run to take a 59-51 lead, the largest of the game for either team.
Following a layup by Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) with 6:46 on the clock, Bucknell was able to muster just two more field goals. The layup gave the Bison a 61-54 edge.
Bucknell still held a 63-60 lead entering the final 90 seconds of play, but a high-arching jumper from the left corner by Margaree King brought Army to within one. Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) answered with an off-balance layup to put the Bison back up by three, but it was the final basket of the game as Stefanie Stone and McGuire combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds.
Bucknell held a one-point lead when Army took possession with 13 seconds to play. McGuire drove toward the basket and was fouled by Champion. Corrine Keller (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) dribbled the length of the court, but came up short on the potential winning jumper as time expired.
Bucknell fell behind early as Army scored the fist seven points. Schober ended the Bison draught four minutes into the contest with a driving layup. That basket began a 13-0 Bucknell run. The key to the run was a Bison defense that limited the Black Knights to no field goals in a nearly nine minute span, and just one in nearly 12 minutes.
Despite the strong defense, Bucknell's largest lead in the first half was five points as Army the score stayed close due to excellent free throw shooting from both teams. The Bison were 12 of 14 from the free throw line in the first half, while the Black Knights were 12 of 16. Bucknell missed its only two free throws of the second half, while Army was 9-for-9 after halftime.
Schober and Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) joined Foster in double figures with 11 points apiece. Army had five players tally double figures, led by 14 each from McGuire and King.
Hollobaugh, who played 39 minutes, limited the Patriot League's leading scorer, Cara Enright, to 10 points, seven below her average.
Bucknell returns home Tuesday night when it hosts Lehigh at 7 p.m. The Bison and Black Knights meet at Sojka Pavilion next Saturday.
