OLEAN, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's tennis squad played a strong match against St. Bonaventure and came out victorious, 4-3, but fell to Buffalo 6-1, in the second match of the day at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center in Olean, N.Y.
The Bison played well against the Bonnies, taking three single and two double matches for the win.
With the match tied at three points apiece, freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) came through for the Orange and Blue to pull of the victory. He lost his first singles game 4-6, but came back and won the next two 6-4, 6-4 and defeated Victor Lecina in the No.5 position.
Sophomore John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) played one of the strongest matches in his career with the Bison and after being down 4-6, battled backed and won his next two sets 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles position over Dejan Stankovic.
In doubles play, the duo of freshmen Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) played like veterans and won a very tight match at the No. 3 doubles position, 9-8 (4).
Hours after the St. Bonaventure victory, the men battled against Buffalo but just ran out of gas.
Winning matches for Bucknell was the freshman duo of Bednarek and Brenner, in the No. 3 doubles position, 8-4, over Fred Duncan and Matthew Kennedy.
Winning the lone singles match and picking up the Bison's only point of the night was freshman Benjamin Rosenstock (West Essex, N.J./West Essex), who won his match at the No. 6 singles spot, over Alejandro Galindo, 8-4.
The men will return to action on March 4, as they host UMBC at the East Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa., scheduled to begin at noon.
