ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With five placewinners, the Bucknell wrestling team enjoyed a successful day at the Navy Classic, finishing fourth in team scoring with 91.5 points. The Bison fell just 10.5 points behind 20th-ranked West Virginia for third, while Navy and Bloomsburg were the top two teams with 148.5 and 141.5 points, respectively. Coming in behind the Orange and Blue was George Mason with 76.5 points to round out the top five.
Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) led the way for the Bison, improving upon his 3-0 dual meet record from last weekend by going 4-0 at the tournament to capture first at 165. Rendos, who was the No. 2-seed in the weight class, opened by pinning Navy's Jesse Feinsod in 2:34. He followed up by defeating Delaware State's Brandon Gardner by technical fall, 17-1 in 4:21, then posted a 5-2 decision over Ricky Schmelyun of Bloomsburg and captured the title after leading 13-0 in the third when No.-1 seed Trebor Clavette was disqualified for flagrant misconduct in the championship match.
Eric Lapotsky (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel Area), the No.-2 seed at 197, wrapped up a runner-up showing for Bucknell. In his first two bouts, he pinned Ed Backus of Binghamton in 34 seconds and Duquesne's Michael Bianco in 1:53. Lapotsky then scored a major decision over Harry Zander of George Mason, 12-4, in the semifinals before falling to No.-1 seed and nationally-ranked No. 15 senior from West Virginia Jared Villers, 9-4, to finish second in the bracket.
At 157, Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) went 4-1 on the day to capture third with his lone loss coming to the second-seeded John Jarred of Navy. David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Area) and Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) rounded out the Bison placewinners. Marble was 5-2 at 133, pinning Duquesne's Jayk Cobbs in his final bout to finish fifth at that weight. Riccio went 3-2 and placed fifth among the 174-pounders.
Bucknell will be back in action this Tuesday, Nov. 21, for the squad's first home meet since the program's reinstatement. The Bison will take on EIWA opponent Army beginning at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym.
