CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) won both distance freestyle events and Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) also had a hand in two victories, but it wasn't quite enough as the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team dropped a close 168-132 decision at Boston College on Sunday afternoon. After opening the 2006-07 campaign with a victory over Holy Cross just 24 hours earlier, the four-time defending Patriot League champion Bison stand 1-1 on the season under new head coach Dan Schinnerer.
Bucknell got off to a hot start against the Eagles, building a 10-point lead with wins in the first two events of the day. First it was the 200-yard medley relay quartet of Morris, Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) winning in a time of 1:52.35. Scheffter, swimming the anchor leg, touched out BC's Meg Hurd by just over a tenth of a second.
Skroski followed with another down-to-the-wire decision inthe 1,000 free. Her winning time of 10:50.00 was just .22 seconds faster than Kim Garcia.
The Eagles won two straight events to take their first lead of the day, but Bucknell went back ahead after the 100 breaststroke, its most dominant performance of the afternoon. Morris (1:10.30), Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Abigail Atkinson (Newton, Conn./Newton) finished 1-2-3, giving the Bison a 49-44 lead.
Boston College moved in front for good with 1-2 finishes in the 200 butterfly and 50 free.
Later in the meet, Bucknell won three straight events, with Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) winning the 200 backstroke in 2:11.84, Woodward taking the 200 breast in 2:29.31 and Skroski winning the 500 free in 5:17.67 (this time a more convincing, six-second victory). The run brought the Bison within 10 points at 118-108, but BC swept the 100 fly to help seal the win.
Bucknell picked up one more victory when Eliza Massie (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) took first in the 3-meter diving with a score of 230.48.
The Bison return to action this Saturday with their first home competition of the season. Bucknell hosts its annual Sprint Invitational at Kinney Natatorium beginning at noon.
