Bucknell Women's Swimming & Diving Comes up Short Against UMBC, 129-106

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) collected top-three finishes in the 50 free and the 100 free, but the Bucknell women's swimming and diving squad came up short against Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday in Kinney Natatorium, falling to the Retrievers by the score of 129-106. The setback leaves the Bison at 1-3-1 (1-1-1 Patriot League) on the season, while UMBC moved its record to 7-1.
Scheffter was the runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 25.05 seconds, while taking third in the 100 free in 54.08. Senior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and junior Kirsten Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) finished in the top-three in two events as well, both with pairs of third-place finishes. Munson's came in the 50 free (25.45) and the 200 fly (2:10.44), while Skroski scored in the 200 free (1:57.68) and in the 500 free (5:18.66).
In front of Skroski in those events were teammates sophomore Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and senior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow). Horstmann posted the second-fastest time in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.43 and Woodward recorded a second-place showing in the 500 free, finishing in 5:12.52. Horstmann also scored in the 100 free as she was fourth to touch the wall with a time of 54.28.
The Bison claimed the third and fourth spots in two more events. Senior Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and freshman Abigail Paules (York, Pa./Baltimore Lutheran) went three-four in the 200 back with times of 2:11.74 and 2:13.86, respectively, and sophomore Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) and freshman Caroline Walsh (Watchung, N.J./Kent Place School) finished back-to-back in the 200 breast. Morris posted a third-place time of 2:27.72 and Walsh was fourth with a time of 2:33.51.
Sophomore Ally St. Claire (Silver Spring, Md./Edmund Burke) and freshman Rebecca Bersani (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) rounded out Bucknell's top finishers in the meet. St. Claire finished third in the 1,000 free (10:57.84), while Bersani recorded a runner-up showing in the one-meter dive (223.28), and scored 215.25 points in the three-meter dive for the third-highest total in the event.
Bucknell will be idle until the new year and is set to return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, when the team will travel to Princeton, N.J., to take on Princeton beginning at 10 a.m.
