Bucknell Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats Holy Cross, 139-96, in Season Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team opened the 2006-07 season with a 139-96 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday in Worcester, Mass. Eight of the 11 individual events were won by members of the Orange and Blue, while the Bison took first in both relays, as well.
Senior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and freshman Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the way for Bucknell, each winning two events. Scheffter captured the top spot in the 50 free in 25.15 seconds and in the 100 free, with a time of 55.24. In her first collegiate meet, Mongan was victorious in the 200 IM (2:12.49) and in the 500 free (5:21.92).
The duo also teamed with junior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) and senior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) to earn a first-place finish for the Bison in 400 free relay with a time of 3:43.41.
Skroski, sophomore Ally St. Claire (Sliver Spring, Md./Edmund Burke), freshman Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and freshman Rebecca Bersani (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) rounded out the individual winners for the Orange and Blue. Skroski took the top spot in the 200 free in 1:58.22, St. Claire came in first in the 1,000 free with a time of 11:02.51 and Bersani scored 232.35 points in the three-meter dive to place first in the event.
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Russell, sophomore Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), senior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and sophomore Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) was victorious, finishing in 4:06.28.
"In our first time out, I was pleased with how we raced," said Bison head coach Dan Schinnerer. "The times will come as the season goes along, but we raced very well. Now the big test will be how we bounce back tomorrow against Boston College."
Bucknell will continue its trip to the New England region with a meet against Boston College, tomorrow, Oct. 29, at noon in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
