Bucknell Men's Swimming and Diving Opens 2006-07 with 155-81 Win over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team opened the 2006-07 season by defeating Holy Cross, 155-81, on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The Bison swept all 13 events contested in the meet, including 11 individual events and two relays.
Sophomores Michael Deighan (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) and Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) were both double-winners for the Orange and Blue. Deighan took first in the 200 IM with a time of two minutes, 3.96 seconds and captured the top spot in the 200 breast in 2:14.87. Manning was victorious in both diving competitions with scores of 234.00 and 227.27 in the one-meter and three-meter, respectively.
Seven other individuals collected first-place finishes as well. Senior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) posted a time of 1:59.52 in the 200 fly, good for the top spot in the event. Junior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) won the 50 free in 22.58 and classmate John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) posted a winning time of 1:48.95 in the 200 free.
Sophomores Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) and Christopher Amato (East Norwich, N.Y./ Kellenberg Memorial) were the respective winners in the 100 free (50.25) and the 500 free (4:57.72).
Freshman Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) claimed the fastest 1,000 free time, 10:12.40, and freshman Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove touched the wall first in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.18.
Bucknell's winning relays consisted of Fletcher, junior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), Crandell and Peterman in the 400 medley relay (3:37.63), while Kawczenski, Amato, Steadman and Peterman swam to victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:16.62.
"In our first time out, I was pleased with how we raced," said Bison head coach Dan Schinnerer. "The times will come as the season goes along, but we raced very well. Now the big test will be how we bounce back tomorrow against Boston College."
Bucknell will continue its trip to the New England region with a meet against Boston College, tomorrow, Oct. 29, at noon in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
